Women’s Day : The first preparatory meeting takes place

The first preparatory meeting of the 2020 International Women’s Day has held in Yaounde this February 13, 2020.

Women’s Day 2020 will be celebrated on March 8, on the theme, “Promoting gender and protecting women’s rights by 2020: taking stock of actions undertaken, setting a new course”.

Prof. Marie Therese Abena Ondoa, Minister of Women’s Empowerment and the Family, chaired the meeting massively attended by women group leaders, Rights groups and other stakeholders, to present their plan of action for 2020.

Mme Marie Therese Abena Ondoa says the 35th edition will be an opportunity for government to come up with a multi-sectorial assessment tool of the National Gender Policy.

The policy will also be revised in order to develop  a more effective plan of action that addresses women’s problems.

Stakeholders are equally seeking to implement a more comprehensive reflection on Women’s Rights and accelerating Gender equality.

2020, A Significant Year

The year 2020 is particularly significant with regards to the advancement of gender equality and zero discrimination.
Some  key issues to be looked into are;

# Evaluation of the Beinjing Programme and platform for Action against discrimination and abuse against women, 25 years after its implementation.

# violence against women

# feminization of poverty

# poor access to education, training, information, poor access to quality health services especially sexual and Reproductive health issues, decision making, and conflict resolution

# Disrespectful use of the woman in commercials by the media

In order to effectively discuss these issues, policy makers will meet in New York twenty-four hours after the Women’s Day celebration, from March 9-20.

Organization Of Women’s Day Celebrations

Commemorative activities of the 35th Women’s Day will be jointly organized by stakeholders and the Ministry of Women’s Empowerment and the Family. However, the role of the Ministry is essentially technical.The stakeholders include, public, private and civil society organizations, as well as development partners. It is required that these partners carry out all activities in accordance with the law.

Two weeks after the event, a report will be sent to the Prime Minister, and diplomatic missions and compatriots abroad.

As women prepare for the event, the Minister calls on them to begin early purchase of the fabric which sells at 6,800 FCFA.
